ALEXANDER HANSEN
In Primates in Peril, I went over four different species that show up on the 2014-2016 list of endangered primate species'. The four species were the gorilla, the orangutan, the red ruffed lemur, and the northern brown howler monkey. Listing threats for each species, and their environments plus a small summary of their lifestyle. This paper helped me learn that there are MANY more primate species endangered than it looks, and its very scary to think that they could be gone soon. I believe I was able to clearly send a message in the paper on the importance of conserving these animals and keeping them alive. In Global Problems, Local Actions, I went over the topic of biodiversity and conservation, listing many conservation efforts made by the U, SLC itself, and the entire state of Utah as well. Also naming a few groups of active conservationists in Utah as well, and their mission for the future. This assignment I did well in finding great sources of groups that Utah has for conservation, and it also really opened my eyes to things we can do to help. This ties in with my first paper, because it goes over conserving endangered species to keep biodiversity alive.
I really did not think much about primate conservation at all before i took this course. After taking this however, It really opened my eyes completely towards conservation of not just primates, but in general. I always thought that just a few things were endangered and assumed we could not do anything about it. I now know that even I can make efforts to conserve all these different species and not have them all disappear on us. The biggest influence to me was actually sitting in class and reviewing each power point slide and listening to how avid the teacher was about conservation of primates. Now i am going to be much more friendly to the climate and really watch for any donation campaigns made towards primate conservation.
I cannot recall too many aha moments. But, I do know one, which was when we were able to look at the skulls of primates, apes specifically. It really made me realize just how similar they are to us. Not just brain and hands, but size, look, and functionality as well. It helped me really look more into things and not just go off of what someone else tells me.
